Dancing Your Way into Fitness

By: Rachon Lawson

We have the opportunity to hear how a childhood friend was able to dance her way into fitness. In 2006 Nadia took her first Jazzercise class, and it changed her life. Here is Nadia’s story on how she danced her way into fitness.

How long have you been doing Jazzercise?

I took my first Jazzercise class in January of 2006 in Columbia, MO with my roommate at the time. I became an instructor in October of 2009.

How did you get involved or learned about it?

I saw a flier in the teacher’s lounge in the school I was working in at the time. I was hooked after my first class.

How has it helped you?

Physical: Paired with healthier eating habits have lost 80 lbs with Jazzercise – my weight loss has been slow and steady and 100% natural without any surgeries, pills, supplements, etc – I started at a size 20 and now I’m around a 12 depending on brand

Emotional: Jazzercise helps me feel better.  When I start my day with dancing, I have a happier and more productive day.  The way Jazzercise impacts my body gives me self-confidence and boosts my self-esteem. When I moved to North Carolina, I had an immediate family with Jazzercise. It made the move a little easier being able to just walk in and feel like I belong.  The feeling is the same if you are visiting another facility anywhere around the world (which is another perk of a membership). These feelings are things you can’t buy!

What do you love about it?

I love that it is an hour of pure fun. Yes, at times there are tough songs but I’m never looking at the clock thinking “is it over yet?” I love that it’s more than just a workout.  It’s a community that builds each other up and looks out for each other.

Why should someone choose Jazzercise as a workout?

They should choose it if they love to dance. Not if they are a good dancer. Not if they feel like they have great rhythm. Just if they love dancing! If they want an environment where they will not feel judged about what they look like, what their fitness level is, how uncoordinated they are.  Jazzercise is an all-inclusive place who accepts everyone!

How many calories does the average person burn?

jazzercise.com says you can burn up to 800 calories per hour

How long are the classes?

Most classes are 1 hour: Dance Mixx, Interval, Fusion, Core, Strike, Strength60

Strength45 is 45 minutes

Express classes are 30 minutes

Where can someone go to learn if Jazzercise is offered in their area?

All you have to do is go to Jazzercise.com and type in your zip code to see where the nearest classes are to you!

Nadia’s story is meant to inspire you to find a fitness outlet that does not feel like working out. Her story is meant to show you that working out can be fun. The challenge is taking the first step in finding what works best for you.
