HAUTE OR HAUX PAS?

I can’t help but notice the recent resurgence the sneaker wedge and high heel sneaker have been making on the 2012 Summer and Fall fashion scene. High profile women such as Beyoncé, Kate Bosworth, and Gisele have all been spotted wearing what I consider to be the worst trend of the year.

The silhouettes are often clunky, gaudy, and generally not much more refined than the versions designed for the adolescent demographic. That being said, I am interested in the concept of the high heel sneaker. As a huge fan of the urban street kick and an even bigger fan of arguably the sexiest shoe ever created – the stiletto, I recognize the market for a chic and sexy sneaker a woman can get her swag on wearing.

Perhaps there is a time and a place for a knock off Chuck Taylor to be fitted with a stiletto heel and a pointed toe – though I certainly can’t think of one.  Maybe Nike had the right idea with SB Dunk High Heel Sneaker – though I find myself straining to think of an event where a Nike dunk with a heel attached to the bottom would be appropriate.

Isabel Marant’s celebrity endorsed internal wedge sneaker does get an honorable mention for the most attractive attempt that I have come across thus far. However, her designs reside in the casual street category and leave very little room to dress up beyond a good pair of liquid leggings, or a maxi skirt.

I want to see a designer come out with a look that has the sophistication level of the Guiseppe Zanotti’s Spring / Summer 2012 collection – yet still maintains all the attitude and edge that goes along with sliding into a shiny new pair of high top Supras. Give me a marriage of high end materials and fashion forward colors. Give me a design that is as bold and courageous as it is refined and mature.

Sound off: What do you think – High Heel  / Wedge Sneakers: Haute trend coming back for 2012 or Fashion Faux Pas?
