Michael K Williams: STYLE 101
On screen or in real life, the transition from ill-fitted and safe clothing to tailored and stylish items is an important journey all men must make. When that transition begins, a man starts to find his way. He starts experimenting with style, finding out what works for him and what doesn’t. Once a man does find his style, he owns it. When it’s time for a man to step out or to chill out—he knows what to wear and how to wear it. One guy who’s mastered this transition is Brooklyn bred, dancer turned actor, Michael K. Williams.
Most of us were introduced to Michael Kenneth Williams as the character Omar Little on HBO’s critically acclaimed show ‘The Wire’. Omar’s hair was in short cornrows or covered by a doo-rag, donned in all black ensembles including his infamous long oversized car coat. This image was emblazoned on the minds of folks worldwide. It wasn’t until his role as Chalky White on HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’ that we were able to see a new Williams. As Chalky White, Williams is always impeccably dressed. Seems Williams’ style has been informed by his character.
GQ was one of the first publications to really realize his potential as a stylish gentleman. His three-piece suit spread in GQ featured him in some of the most relevant and talented menswear designers to date. Fully suited in the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, John Varvatos, Tom Ford and Canali. Williams served as the focal point for a re-emerging trend that GQ wanted to highlight.
In November of 2011, Mr. Porter, a premiere high end shopping and men’s information site also saw the influence of Williams as they tapped him to be a part of an outerwear campaign. Again, Williams stepped in the role of style icon, using his dance background to give movement to the editorial, Williams shot “THE COAT: 5 Ways to Wear” editorial by acclaimed photographer Terry Richardson. Sporting high end brands like Givenchy, Margaret Howell and J.Crew , Williams owned the spread.
When he’s not in photo-shoots or on television, he’s killing the red carpet. Whether he’s wearing a statement coat like the Burberry Fur trim car coat he wore at the Hugo premiere last year, he’s bold to rock a cobalt blue suit with a brown fedora he wore the “Sing 4 Your Song” premiere or the snakeskin jacket he wore to the GQ Men of the Year event. Williams much like the roles he plays, isn’t afraid to take chances with the outfits he wears from day to day.
We’re not going give all the credit to Chalky White for Williams’ sartorial brilliance, Michael K. Williams—the man known for his appearances at New York Fashion Week— is a fashion lover indeed. Isn’t it obvious?
