You can feel the love from Mizz Juju’s Bake Shopthe moment you step through the door. This down home bakery opened its doors August ’10, and has been pleasing the palates of Hazelwoodlocals ever since.

Owner Julia Tate runs the bakery with help from her husband, as well as her assistant, Kriska Gurley. Tate has been baking for as long as she can remember, and was inspired by her mother, Cozella Tabb. Tabb was a professional chef whose clients included Mississippi State University’spresident.

Armed with recipes from her mother, Tate whips up a variety of sweets, ranging from chocolate chip cookies to sour cream bundt cake and just about everything in between. Her specialty, however, is the popular homemade butter-fold yeast rolls.

“The rolls are by far our most sought after item,” Tate said.

It’s no wonder the buttery rolls are so popular. The rolls, priced at $6.99 for a dozen and $3.99 for a half-dozen, are both flaky and moist, with a hint of butter flavor that isn’t too overpowering.

In addition to the delightful rolls, Mizz Juju’s Bake Shop sells gooey butter squares, lemon whipped cream pie and sweet potato pie, among others. Everything is made in house and from scratch.

As far as future plans are concerned, Tate said she is “extremely optimistic.” She plans on introducing breakfast items this month.

“We’re going to roll out a breakfast menu with breakfast sandwiches, coffee, homemade hot chocolate, and Juju Buns,” she said.

Juju Buns are Tate’s version of a cinnamon bun, and are sure to be a popular sweet treat for the morning crowds.

Next time you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by Mizz Juju’s Bake Shop. You can also find Mizz Juju’s delicious offerings at Soulard Farmers Market every Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon. Get there early if you can; Tate’s delicious treats don’t stick around for long.

“We’re usually sold out at the Market around 11 a.m.,” Tate said as she smiled.
