Have you heard of yoni steaming? Well I have and although I’m cautious about things regarding the “vag” area, I’m excited to try it! Why? Because it makes the yoni a little happier. Not to mention, I am a firm believer in natural options versus the pharmaceutical route. I have never been big on popping pills or chemically infused products. The older I get, I am slowly gravitating towards remedies my grandmother and great-grandmother used.
My mother is a huge advocate for natural remedies, and will tell her doctor in a heartbeat, “I’m not trying to keep the pharmaceutical industry in business,” every time he tries to “suggest” a new medicine for her to be on. So, with that, what better place to start with than the vagina. It’s the center of my being and it’s the giver of life. Like most women, if your vagina is off—everything is off. Whether it’s an uncomfortable feeling or odor, no woman feels sexy when their vagina is off-balance.
In saying that, I’ve been looking into the yoni steaming. Since douches are not good vaginal cleansing options, this seems like the next best thing.
The vaginal steam, known in other cultures as the bajo, Chai-yok or yoni steam, is a remedy becoming known today as the forgotten ancient wisdom for women’s healing and is being passionately invigorated by a lot of today.
The ancient remedy has been passed down through generations. The vaginal steam has also been known to maintain the health of the miraculous uterus. It treats everything from painful menses, endometriosis, to infertility. It may seem like a miracle remedy; the vaginal steam is an easy and inexpensive treatment for woman to use at home regularly.

HOW DOES A VAGINAL STEAM WORK?
A vaginal steam is very similar to a facial or nasal steam, except in this case, the steam come from a pot with boiled water and herbs to reach the outer lips of her vagina. Since the tissues of the vagina are porous and absorbent—the warmth of the steam softens and open them.
The herbs that consist of: rosemary, mugwort, motherwort, yarrow, calendula, lavender, partridge berry, and rose petals, are placed in the hot water, and their medicinal qualities, including the oils are released and carried to the skin’s surface—and inside the vagina. From here they are absorbed into the bloodstream and into the uterus.
Studies prove the herbal steam thins mucus, increases circulation, and cleanses a woman’s entire reproductive system. It allows it to shed unnecessary membranes and build-up. Though the results are varied—they are amazing.
Many women have found yoni steams to have the following effects:
- Significantly reduce pain, bloating and exhaustion associated with menstruation.
- Decrease menstrual flow as well as reduce dark purple or brown blood at the onset or end of menses.
- Regulate irregular or absent menstrual cycles.
- Increase fertility, especially when combined with Mayan abdominal massage
- Speed healing and tone the reproductive system after birth.
- Treat uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, uterine weakness, uterine prolapse and endometriosis.
- Assist with the repair of a vaginal tear, episiotomy, or C-section scar.

During my research, I also discovered you can do this process at home. Since it’s my first time, I’d rather let the professionals do it first and then I take it from there. I’m all about saving money and being healthy at the same time.
How to do a Vaginal Steam
It is easy to try this relaxing method at home. Simply steep approximately one cup dry vaginal steaming herbs in a basin of hot water and find a quiet place to relax with the steam below your bottom for 20-40 minutes.
The next step is to place a metal basin with the herbs and hot water inside your toilet bowl and sit as you normally would. You may also set up two chairs with bottom rungs side by side about six inches apart, placing a cutting board on the rungs between the two chairs and placing the basin of water and herbs on the cutting board. Sit with a cheek on each chair, with the basin directly below.
Or, you may purchase a special vaginal steaming stool to use (a chair or stool with a hole in the seat). In all cases, be sure the water and steam aren’t too hot to avoid burns.
Stay wrapped in warm blankets as you sit. This is a great time to write in a journal, meditate or set some intentions! Once the time has passed, remain wrapped in blankets, and lie down in a warm bed for the night.
The herbs continue to work on your reproductive system as you sleep, and you’ll wake up feeling healed and pampered. If you are like countless other women who have tried vaginal steaming, you’ll notice that your next period will be more comfortable, with reduced cramps, limited bloating and no more fatigue.
So if you’re looking for something to do with your girlfriends, make it a girl’s night! My friends and I have planned to do that very thing, and the cost is just $40. But, if you’re on a budget or strapped for cash, you can certainly DIY at home.
